12HIS - History NCEA Level 2

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr C. Carruthers.

The main theme that underpins all topics in NCEA Level 2 History is 'global forces that shaped the modern world'. This involves a study of some of the more significant historical forces that influenced several significant 20th Century events. The first topic centres on the forces of colonialism, paternalism and nationalism in the context of New Zealand's rule over Samoa in the early 20th Century. Students will undertake a historical research project on the Mau independence movement in Samoa that opposed NZ rule. Knowledge of colonialism and nationalism will be further enhanced by an in - depth study of the Vietnam War and the Vietnamese population's decades long struggle for autonomy. A study of Zionism as a movement and the part it played in the creation of Israel in 1948 will also feature in the 12 HIS course.

12 HIS is a literacy heavy course, where wider reading and proactive use of the Dilworth School Library is encouraged. Literacy skills, resource interpretations skills, and research skills will be taught and assessed in all topics of work.

12 HIS will offer students 18 credits in total, via 9 internal credits and 9 external credits. All standards offer UE reading credits and both external examinations offer UE writing credits.

Course Overview

Term 1
In Term 1 the topic studied will be the Mau independence movement that sought autonomy from NZ rule in Samoa. The main skill underpinning this unit will be analysing various types of primary and secondary sources. This will be assessed via a 4 credit historical research achievement standard.

Term 2
In Term 2 the topic studied will be an examination of the factors that led to the creation of the modern state of Israel in 1948. The immediate consequences of Israel's founding for both Jews and Palestinians will be studied. This unit of work will be assessed via a 5 credit achievement standard that examines different historical perspectives on the same event.

Term 3
In Term 3 the topic studied will be the Vietnam War and the decades long struggle of the Vietnamese people to free themselves from foreign intervention and colonial rule. A study of the historical forces of colonialism, nationalism, and communism form a large part of the this unit of work. This unit will be assessed via a 5 credit formal essay that examines key historical ideas in the NCEA Level 2 external examination. Term 3 will also have a strong focus on the skill of analysing various types of historical sources; this skill is assessed via a 4 credit external examination.

Term 4
In Term 4 the focus will be on preparing 12 HIS students for their two external examinations; one 5 credit essay and one 4 credit paper that assesses students ability to examine historical resources on an unknown context.
