13ENG - English NCEA Level 3

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms K. Boudreau.

13ENG - English NCEA Level 3

Aims of the Course:

This course aims to strongly support the development of reading and writing skills required for a study of the Arts at Tertiary level.  This is a University Entrance Approved course, with two externally assessed standards and a total of 21 credits offered. The range and sophistication of literature makes this the ideal course to pair with the study of Scholarship English at Year 13.

Topics:

A Connections Report asks students to engage with a range of related texts to critically respond to the similarities and differences between them

A Writing Portfolio is developed throughout the year, comprising a range of writing forms and styles. Students will self-select the two pieces and draft these to a publishable standard.

A Formal Oral Presentation asks students to use presentation skills to communicate a depth of ideas to an audience of their choice.

A Novel Study will offer an in depth study of an extended text, its creator and the context in which it was written. Students will show their analysis and evaluation of this text through a formal critical response essay.

A Film Study will also allow students to examine text, creator and context through the world of visual and aural devices. Students will critically respond to ideas in their studied film through a formal critical essay.

Other, eg. Field trips, Curriculum Enrichment

Where possible, this course will be supplemented with a visit to a relevant theatrical experience. We may also look to include guest speakers to enrich the learning of the class.

Recommended Prior Learning

Students should have achieved at least 14 Credits in 12ENG. This should include the 2.4 Writing Portfolio and at least one external standard.

Pathway

Scholarship:

Students who are dedicated to the study of English may subscribe to the English Scholarship programme, which will be taught outside of class time. This programme requires a high level of independent study, and culminates in students sitting the English Scholarship examination at the end of the year.
