13MUS - Music NCEA Level 3

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr D. Stent.

13MUS - Music NCEA Level 3

Aims of the Course:

Year 13 Music offers ākonga to select a specialist pathway of study that will occupy the majority of their class time - either music composition or music performance. All ākonga will undertake classes in harmony and tonal analysis and enter a common external standard of assessment. Due to the bespoke nature of this course, individual ākonga are required to be highly motivated, visionary learners who can implement short- and medium-term learning strategies effectively in order to achieve long-term outcomes.

Topics:

Topics covered in Year 13 Music include:

  • Complex harmonic analysis using Roman numeral and jazz/rock notation, extended harmonies identifying unusual chords, 4-part writing in a range of music styles, and identification and evidencing of modulations in music scores.

  • Bespoke analysis, research, workshopping, tutorials and visiting teacher support for individualised performance programmes and performer/composer-specific repertoire.

  • Leadership and personal (self) management strategies in order to form foundations of success at a tertiary level of post-Dilworth study.

  • Application and extra-curricular investment towards Scholarship Music recitals.

Other, eg. Field trips, Curriculum Enrichment

All ākonga in the Music space should give due consideration to involvement in co-curricular music activities, opportunities for leadership and mentoring within the Performing Arts Faculty, participation in the itinerant music programme, and engagement in external events and competitions.
