13ENV - Visual English NCEA Level 3

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms K. Boudreau.

13ENV - Visual English NCEA Level 3

Aims of the Course:

This course aims to build on the skills learned in English from Years 7 to 12, but to offer something different to students who are interested in the content of English, but do not intend to study the Arts in tertiary education.

Visual English has a focus on graphic novels in the first few terms, investigating how this communication form has risen in popularity, reputation and effectiveness in recent years. It also asks students to demonstrate their learning about visual communication through a visual language standard.

Despite offering a point of difference to the traditional study of English, this remains a University Entrance Approved course, with two externally assessed standards and a total of 18 credits offered.

Topics:

An Investigation of Graphic Novels in the first term asks students to identify, analyse and critique visual and language techniques used by graphic novelists to develop complex ideas.

Presenting takes centre stage in Term 2, where students have the option to build on the learning of visual techniques in Term 1 in order to create their own visual representations of a critical response to the societies in which they live or an oral presentation that develops ideas in a fluent, coherent way..

A Film Study will build on the visual language skills learned in the first half of the year to include moving images and aural techniques. Students will be asked to critically respond to ideas in their studied film.

A Novel Study will also accompany the film study in the external examination. For this, students will need to engage with a challenging Level 3 text on a critical level, responding in a formal critical essay.

Other, eg. Field trips, Curriculum Enrichment

Where possible, this course will be supplemented with a range of speakers from the communications realm, including a local graphic novelist and/or communications lecturer from a local university.

Recommended Prior Learning

A student must have achieved at least 14 Level 2 English Credits.

Pathway

Scholarship:

Students who are dedicated to the study of English may subscribe to the English Scholarship programme, which will be taught outside of class time. This programme requires a high level of independent study, and culminates in students sitting the English Scholarship examination at the end of the year.
