12ENL - English NCEA Level 2: Literacy Focus

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms K. Boudreau.

12ENG - English (General) NCEA Level 2

Aims of the Course:

Year 12 English is designed to build the communication skills of all students, while exposing them to a range of literature that will help open new worlds of empathy and understanding. This course is also designed to prepare students for the literacy rich components of tertiary study, with all of our standards counting toward University Entrance Literacy.

Topics:

Research asks students to select a topic of interest to them, and to read a range of credible sources to gain information about that topic. This unit results in a written report about the issue.

The Writing Portfolio spans three terms, and allows students to investigate a range of writing styles. At the conclusion of this unit, students will draft and edit their writing to a publishable standard.

Students in this course will also create and deliver a Formal Speech, which will build confidence and focus students on the writing and delivery skills required to be a strong oral communicator.

A Novel Study is included in this course as an in depth study of literature. Students will engage with the story itself, as well as the tools the author has used to create the text. This will be the only External standard examined in this course, allowing students to focus on this one paper, which offers UE Reading and/or Writing credits for UE Literacy.

Recommended Prior Learning

This course carries on the learning from the mandatory Year 11 English programme.
